Fire Protection System Engineering

FPEC is the only one company which is specialized for basic engineering of fire protection system for process plants.
Our company representative has over 40 years experience in this field, including those of major plant contractor.  This experience and knowledge have been passed down to our members, and FPEC has over 20 years experiences of a basic system design of fire protection system for oil / chemical plants and LNG / LPG plants, including domestically and overseas, for major contractors.  With this long experience, we have deep knowledge and design tools.  Based on customer specifications and applicable laws and standards, we perform disaster risk analysis of the entire plant from an engineering point of view, and then prepare specification of basic design criteria for fire protection system so that the smooth project progress after the basic design can be supported.  We also provide technical evaluations for quotes from fire protection equipment manufacturers, check approved documents after order, technical reviews and support, and respond to comments from end users.

 Risk Analysis

When summarizing the basic concepts of disaster prevention at refineries and chemical plants, it is important to analyze the risk of the entire plant, identify the hazardous area, and consider countermeasures.  Based on the process flow and system P&ID, we identify areas with a high risk of dangerous material leakage / gas dispersion, fire and explosion, and specify them in basic design requirement document as countermeasures and/or design requirement of fire extinguishing system, fire / gas alarm system.

Please refer to Plant Disaster Risk Assessment for details on risk analysis, and Plant Disaster Simulation for programs uses. These show the basic methods and concepts for disaster risk analysis.  Although it is not always necessary to carry out such detailed risk analysis and evaluation for completing the design requirement document for a fire protection system, the basic concept will be followed.

Preparing Documents and Scope of Work

Related to the fire protection system design, our scope of work and providing document are as follows:

  Basic Design

  1. Basic Concept of Design
    • Review of lows & regulations and codes & standards, such as NFPA, BS, API etc.
    • Application of fire fighting and fire/gas alarm systems corresponding to each facility.
    • Basic design criteria for fire protection systems.
    • Fire water requirement criteria.
  2. Preparation of Layout Drawing
    • Typical installation drawing of fire fighting equipment and system
    • Layout drawing of fire mains (Refer to here)、and firefighting equipment(Mapping of Foam/Water monitors will be done considering wind velocity and direction by using our mapping software)
    • Layout drawing of heat/smoke/fire detectors
    • Arrangement drawing of spray/sprinkler nozzles (by using our mapping software, mapping of nozzle can be done by freely changing direction, spray angle, and elevation etc,.)
  3. Preparation of P&ID and Header Diagram
    • P&ID of fire water pumps
    • Header diagram of fire mains with hydrants, fixed water monitors etc., and the branches for fire protection systems
    • P&ID of fire protection systems
    • Overall schematic drawing of fire/gas alarm systems.
    • Logic diagrams / Cause & Effect chart for fire/gas alarm systems.
  4. Preparation of data sheets and individual specifications of the fire protection system or equipment
    • Technical specification / data sheet
  5. Preparation of manuals
    • Turn-over procedure manuals
    • Commissioning manuals
    • Operation manuals

Detail design of fire protection system

Basically, detail design is subletting to outsources, but below works are performed by ourselves.

  • Check & review of piping drawings
  • Check & review of electrical drawings
  • Check & review of HVAC drawings
  • Line lists
  • Bill of quantities of the materials

Support for purchasing fire protection equipment/system

Every works related to the procurement are supported by us.

  • Technical evaluation of manufacturer's quotation
  • Support of kick-off meeting with awarded manufacture
  • Review of manufacturer’s document
  • Witness inspection at manufacturer’s shop test

  Coordination activity

  • Meeting with end user and reflecting the comment to design
  • Clarification to end user’s questionnaire
  • Coordination with down stream engineering group
  • preparation of work split list between upstream and downstream engineering group
